Encountering the ‘Invalid Theme’ button
Not too long ago, Tumblr introduced a system that checks a theme’s HTML, if the system deems the HTML invalid, they make it seem near impossible to work with the theme.
But the criteria for invalid HTML is not clear, what deems HTML to be ‘invalid’? It’s safe to assume that this is a hit and miss feature, especially when it comes to custom built themes (themes not listed in Tumblr’s theme garden).
So what does it mean? Well it essentially means nothing. When you install a custom theme, in this case Kinley or Polarmark, you may encounter it the first time you paste the HTML into the editor pane. The button’s function doesn’t change however, clicking it will still update the theme’s preview. You can continue on and click save, reload the page and you’ll unlikely see the button again.
It’s safe to ignore this button, it does not actually affect the ability to update and save the theme. We can promise you that my themes’ HTML is valid and working and we’re dedicated to keeping the custom themes we release up-to-date.

Kinley theme updated to 3.2

The Kinley Theme has received a small update which includes an update to the menu arrows and a fix for the like button on posts.

3

Kinley v3

The promised update for Kinley is finally here and it’s huge! Kinley version 3 was built from the ground up, literally built from scratch. As the previous versions of the theme received more updates it became more bloated and slow, building it from the ground up allowed the reduction of unnecessary clutter and features.

So what’s new?

  • Built from the ground up to optimise for speed and stability.
  • Advanced custom lightbox integration. Inspired by Tumblr’s latest update, posts can be viewed in full from the index page without losing your place while scrolling.
  • Tidied up permalink page.
  • Automatic Updates + Improved Installing - CSS and JS files are hosted on Untitled Themes’ server which means they’ll be kept up to date without you having to install the theme again. Plus when an update is available which requires re-installing, you will see a banner at the top of the customize page with a simple tool to update.
  • Install file has been updated, it actually looks amazing if I say so myself, it’s a highlight.
  • Slight appearance tweaks to improve consistency.

What’s been removed? (Note: a number of features considered redundant or causing issues have been removed.)

  • Social icons from the top menu have been removed (will return in a future update, removed because they weren’t compatible with Firefox).
  • Pinterest’s Pin-It button has been removed because it didn’t function very well.
  • Facebook Comments has been removed because no one found much use for it.
  • Traverse Scrolling has been removed because it was prematurely released and was of little use.
  • ‘Install Theme’ button has been removed along with the Theme slide down, however a simple ‘Theme’ link remains in the menu.
  • Appearance Tags are slowly being rolled out, at present they’re not functional but they will start to reappear over the next few weeks with new documentation.
  • Custom pages are now automatically added to the ‘More’ menu.

If you already own Kinley, just open the install file you downloaded when you bought it and skip through the steps (without actually completing them) until you get to the last step and click the ‘Update*’ button (this has been improved in the latest version).

You can install the latest version here.

Recent theme issues

A number of themes have been affected recently by an update to jQuery. The issue was completely my fault, when I design websites and themes, I use the latest jQuery script which is automatically updated when a new version is available. However in the most recent release, a handful of functions were depreciated including one that is used in the infinite scroll script. Without it, the infinite scroll is unable to work and in some cases even cause the theme to not show at all.

I have been working hard to address this issue despite being overseas without a computer back. I’ve essentially started replacing the jquery-latest.js with jquery-1.7.2.min.js in the head of each theme, however the update takes some time to be approved and themes with edited HTML will not be updated. If you’re having an issue, I ask that you simply replace:

http://code.jquery.com/jquery-latest.js

With:

http://www.untitledthemes.com/jquery.js

For Level82 themes, simply replace:

http://static.tumblr.com/rejwoxv/VL5mbnyfu/theme.js

With:

http://static.tumblr.com/jw8fmba/JuPmhkses/theme.js

This will be found under the head tag, press control/command F to quickly search for it.

This applies to most Untitled Themes’ themes and Level82 themes. All themes in the Tumblr Theme Garden will be issued an update which will fix this, however if you have customized the theme by editing the HTML then you will need to replace the code above of reinstall the theme. Kinley has been updated and users will need to replace the code above or download the update from the install file found in the .zip.  Stacky 5 and Cinch will be updated as soon as I have access to a computer possible.

  • Photosets can now be made large.
  • ‘Photosets as sliders’ has been removed due to performance issues and increasing page load times.

Want to see something included in Kinley V1.8?

Version 1.8 may still be a while off but now is a good time to make some feature suggestions. Version 1.8 will so far include the following additions:

  • The buttons on each post have been restyled.
  • The archive and subscribe can be disabled separately.
  • You may now use Facebook’s comment system (which is a lot better).
  • You can use the arrow keys to go to different pages (when infinite scroll is disabled or on permalink pages).
  • An option to show the archive in a slide down like the ask and submit boxes.
  • A problem with title has been fixed.
  • Hash tags in the URL will show certain parts of the blog without having to click on anything. For example the link above has the URL http://kinleytheme.tumblr.com/#ask which shows the ask slide down, whereas http://kinleytheme.tumblr.com/ask goes straight to the ask page.
  • Pages that aren’t associated to posts now optionally take up the entire available space.
  • An issue with the option ‘Show a link to the ask box on messages’ has been addressed and now works.

And more if you click the link above and message your suggestion.

Kinley version 1.7

Following the release of version 1.6 less than two weeks ago, which was missing a lot of the intended updates, 1.7 is now available and is by far the largest update Kinley has seen since its initial release. The update includes and fixes the following:

  • The header has been revamped and includes the following changes:
    • If ‘Static menu’ is not selected then the menu part of the header will float as you scroll past a certain point.
    • You can now add a number of social links to the right of the menu. Options include Facebook, Twitter (which is added if you set it up under your blog settings), Flickr, YouTube, Vimeo, Skype, DeviantArt and Behance. Pinterest and more will come in the future. This feature is not supported in Firefox.
    • The ‘More’ menu has been tidied up.
  • A large number of appearance tags have been added to the list, including color options. To use the new color options - tag the post with ‘color yellow’ (or whatever basic color you desire). There are also several ‘secret’ appearance tags for you to discover.
  • An option has been added to make photos bleed to the edges of the post (photos no longer have borders).
  • An option to hide post captions on the index page has been added.
  • Post sources have been moved to the meta line of the post (provided comments aren’t enabled) and an option to shorten them to just ‘Source’ has been added.
  • Typekit integration has been added.
  • The meta information at the bottom of each post has been restyled to match the menu.

The install page has also been updated with the following:

  • A link to update your copy of the theme has been added to the bottom of the install page.
Not mentioned in 1.6’s release notes are:
  • The new Untitled Themes theme assistant has been added on the customize page.
  • When purchasing the theme, you can save 10% by sharing the theme on Facebook or Twitter.

If you would like to preview the new version, visit the preview page here, if you would like to purchase the theme click here and if you have already purchased the theme and would like the update, message me with the name or email address you used to purchase it.
